Interbiz World: Enterprises need to start ethinking, says CA's Wang
by Cath Everett in Las Vegas

Organisations need to look “outside the box” and start “ethinking” if they are to succeed in the new Internet world, according to Charles Wang, Computer Associates’ (CA) chairman and chief executive.

Enterprises need to provide users with real world interfaces to keep their attention and enable them to use technology without needing to know anything about it. They also need to use technology so that users can find the information they need easily and to develop relationships with them.

“Companies must possess ethinking to survive and prosper in the Web world and to keep up with the profound changes that are occurring at a frantic pace. We need new solutions and new ways of making decisions, and all the pieces are there,” he said in his keynote speech at Interbiz World in Las Vegas on Monday.

He claimed that CA had the four technology pieces that would enable customers to exploit this new Web world and “for the first time, I can really say we can produce the entire solution - it’s where it really all begins.”

These pieces, he attested, were the Interbiz manufacturing, financial, banking and human resources applications that have become part of CA’s product portfolio as a result of acquisitions, and which will be cross-fertilised with technology currently found in the firm’s Unicenter TNG systems management software.

As a result, the packages would, in future, include intelligence in the form of CA’s nugent neural network agents, which can learn from experience rather than rules, by watching the behaviour of systems on a network. “But this barely scratches the surface. Interbiz is going to integrate nugents in its solutions to predict business outcomes,” Wang explained.

The applications would also include real world interfaces that were created by the company’s Unicenter 3D visualisation engine, renamed bizvision, and “the infrastructure to tie it all together” would be CA’s Jasmine TND object oriented database.

Reuven Battat, Interbiz’s president, added in his keynote speech: “We can add value by sharing Interbiz and CA technology to integrate diverse business applications and diverse businesses. The key themes are interbusiness to enable secure interbusiness collaboration over the Web, intelligence to intelligently analyse and visualise the extended enterprise in real time, and prediction for predicting future business events.”

He continued: “What Unicenter was for the CIO, Interbiz is for the CEO to help him manage his organisation by leveraging a single unified infrastructure. The CEO is usually the last one to know and we want to make him the first one to know, so he can know what’s happening in the near future.”
