(54) PHOTON PUSH-PULL RADIATION DETECTOR FOR USE IN CHROMATICALLY SELECTIVE CAT FLAP CONTROL AND 1,000 MEGATON, EARTH-ORBITAL, PEACE-KEEPING BOMB (71) 1, ARTHUR PAUL PEDRICK, British subject, 77. Hillfield Road, Selsey, Sussex, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: :--- This invention is concerned with' a device, which will respond with considerable sensitivity to specific intensities of radiant energy to which it may be exposed, and thus may be used for a number of applications in which it is required to carry out an operation in response to specific emissions of the strength of the so-called "electromagnetic wave", to which it is directed but, in particular it can be used
As will be made clear, the radiation sensitive device, according to the invention, depends upon the simple process, which occurs with respect to when-light falls on moveable plates in a vacuum as occurs with respect to the plates of the rotor in what is known as a Crooke's radiometer.
In the accompanying drawings:- Figures 2 and 3 give explanation of the above effects. Figures 4 and 5 show two forms of the "sensitive radiation detector", - according to the invention, which, in Figure 4, depends on"photon-push" and in Figure 5 on "photon pull". Figures 6 and 7, show application of the radiation detector as in Figures 4 and 5, in a chromatically selective "cat flap" operative to admit a cat of one fur colouration, for example with ginger fur, to a house but effective to exclude a black cat from the premises. Figures 8, 9 and 10, show applications of the radiation detectors, as in Figures 4 and 5, to the control of a 1000 Megaton Earth Orbital Nuclear Retaliation Satellite, forming part of an Automatic Response Nuclear Deterrent System, intended to obtain the release of the tritium and deuterium in H bombs for peaceful use. Figures 1(A) and (B) are supposed to represent the well known form of a Crooke's radiometer, in the form of a small four bladed motor in an evacuated bulb, the blades having black faces on one side, and silvered, or mirror faces, on the other, asusually illustrated and described in any standard physics book. It is usually described in the physics book, how, as in Figure 1(A), if radiation i.e. sunlight, falls on the bulb, as a whole, the rotor rotates in the sense (anti-clockwise as shown in the Figures) as if the light is pressing on the black faces of the four blades, or plates. One explanation given for the rotation is that there is a small amount of air left in the bulb, and that it is the molecules of this air i.e. oxygen and nitrogen molecules, reacting with the warmer black sides of the plates that sends them round. However it is believed that this explanation is probably incorrect since if the bulb is put in front of an electric fire and allowed to become so hot that it is difficult to handle, it still goes round at high speed, when it would have been thought the extra warming of the black sides would make very little difference to the overall heating. It is postulated that the rotation depends only upon the momentum effect of tiny particles in light photons being absorbed into, or reflected from, the rotor plates. Figure 1(B) shows what it is not usually described in a Physics book, how if the radiometer is placed in an environment of radiation, which is just not sufficient to overcome the friction of the spindle bearings, and a pencil of light is directed only at the silvered, or mirror, sides; of the plates, the rotor is carried round the same sense of rotation as in Figure 1(A), but rather slowly. This is somewhat surprising, but it seems to be a further confirmation that the fact that when light, for example of the strength as in a laser beam, strikes a very flat water or liquid surface, that the liquid can be observed with delicate instruments to "jump up to meet it a bit", so that light and other forms of radiation as well as exerting a pressure on surface on which they fall, which can be detected by sensitive instruments, also PULL at such surfaces. In considering the effect, or explanation thereof of the operation as shown in Figure 1(B), since Einstein was given the Nobel prize for his 1905 "invention" of the photon or "wave-packet" of light, using Plank's Quantum theory, to explain the photo-electric effect, we should apparently accept the fact that, at least under some circumstances, the so called "electro-magnetic waves", do not come in continuous streams, but in "packets of waves", and such concept certainly gives an excellent explanation of the photo-electric effect. However ,it also introduces problems which did not exist before the introduction of the Quantum theory, since as I have for example pointed out in UK Patent No. 1,311,140, if we shine a light at a glass plate at an angle, as in Figure 2(A), it is experimentally true that, simultaneously, some light passes through, while some is reflected. But if light comes in indivisible "photons", as shown in Figure 2(A), if you are one such photon, how do you decide whether to go on through, or bounce back, or reflect or, in other words, "Does God play Dice with the Universe?" I am informed by a Professor of Physics that there is "no one on Earth", who can explain this simple problem for me. But in UK Patent No. 1,311,140, I have suggested that if we imagine, what we cannot see, the photon not as a "wave-packet" but as a "particle-packet", formed by a series of (spinning) pairs of tiny point-like particles i.e. the hypothetical graviton particle, moving along in a sinusoidal double-helix, for which the helix diameter is a measure of the so called "wave-length", we can give a causal explanation, to the simultaneous passage through, and reflection of, a light ray, as in Figure 2(A), since it is then going to make a difference, according to the exact line of movement of such a "Cylindrical light photon", how it will interact with the spacing of atoms in the surface of a glass plate, as in Figures 2(A) and (B), which can explain the operation of dichroic, or colour sensitive glass, as used in Colour T/V cameras. Let us now consider the rotation of the rotor in Figure 1(B) in relation to Figures 3(A) and (B). It is an experimental fact, as illustrated by Figure 1(B) that if we shine a light only at the mirror sides of the plates, the rotor goes round in the same sense as in the Figure as if we had shone it at the black sides, but very much more slowly and only if there is an environment of overall radiation, which is not quite sufficient to overcome the friction in the spindle end bearings. How do we explain this? If we consider that a series of "indivisible wave packet photons" are about to hit the mirror, or white, sides of the plates, only three things can happen . . . either
What can be the explanation for this? The only possible explanation appears to be that the "nature" of the photon is such that it passes into the material or surface atoms of the mirror surface, in some way is turned round through 180 degrees, and in leaving the surface, drags upon the mirror surfaces, thus pulling round the rotor be leaving behind a part of its energy, and passes back as a light ray, with a series of photons of somewhat depleted quantum energy. But this seems to me to be a physical explanation which cannot be applied to a series of "wave-packet photons" as pictured in Figure 3(A). It is maintained rather that it proves the photon, as suggested in UK Patent No.1,311,140, must be capable of being broken up into even smaller particles, i.e. gravitons, which is contrary to the whole theory of the quantum, if a photon is an "indivisible-wave packet" i.e. it would seem to necessarily be a "particle-packet". Figures 4 and 5 show two radiant energy detector devices according to the invention. In the detector of Figure 4, which operates upon "photon-push", as applies to the Crooke's radiometer shown in Figure 1(A), radiant energy is received into the open end of tube 1, is reflected from the parabolic mirror face 2, onto a cofocal, parabolic, mirror face on a central body 3. Thus the rays reflected from this are a more concentrated parallel group which are still more concentrated by a convex lens 4 onto a black sided plate 5. The plate 5 is lightly mounted at its edges 6, and as a result of the pressure of the light photons falling on it, as for the rotor in Figure 1(A), is moved against the pressure of a small compression spring the force exerted by which can be adjusted by a small set screw. Thus this set screw can be adjusted so that a certain strength of radiation entering the tube 1, is just sufficient to move the plate 5 sufficiently to bridge contacts 7 and completea circuit between terminals 8 and 9. These terminals 8 and 9 may be used in a control circuit for controlling some form of operation, which it is desired should be initiated in response to a certain strength of radiation detected. The detector in Figure 5, is similar to that in Figure 4, except that it operates on "photon-pull", as for the rotor in Figure 1(B), and the light photons falling on the mirrorplate 5, pull it in the direction of the arrows in Figure 5, against the effect of a tension spring adjusted by a suitable knob, the movement of plate 5 to the right bridging the two contacts 7 to complete a circuit including the terminals 8 and 9. Figures 4 and 5 thus show the manner of operation of the invention as a "radiant energy detection unit". Figures 6 and 7 show one application of the radiant energy detection device, according to the invention, used in a "chromatic cat flap control unit", the purpose of which is as follows. There is at the "Hillfield Road, One Man Think-Tank Radiation Research Laboratory", a Ginger Cat, who, with increasing years, is not as agile as he was, and quite often when coming in at nights from a bit of mouse hunting, is, when the kitchen door is open, over taken on the way to his cat food, by the black cat from next door, who is much younger and more agile. The problem therefore is how to let "Ginger" in, but exclude the black cat who belongs next door. According to the invention therefore, the chromatic cat flap control unit, as shown in Figures 6 and 7, has a spring mounted floor plate 11, which if a cat stands upon it, is depressed to operate a switch 12, linked by cable 13 to a terminal 14, on a control unit 15 which energises two strong lights 16 and 17, which direct strong beams of light on the cat's back as he stands on plate 11. Radiant energy reflected from the cat's back, as illuminated by lights 16 and 17, passes up tube 18, to a radiant energy detector, according to the invention, as described with reference to Figures 4 and 5. If the radiant energy is strong enough to operate the switch of detector device 19, the control unit 15, operates a motor 20, to raise by pinion and rack or other suitable form of mechanism the "cat flap" plate 22, and allow the cat to move through the access hole into the kitchen. By such a control unit it ought to be possible, since the fur of a black cat, as shown in Figure 7, will not reflect much radiation from its back up tube 18, to exclude the black cat from next door, while "Ginger" will have access to the kitchen if he stands on plate 11. In this way considerable feline rivalry may be avoided. When I showed Ginger my drawings for the "chromatically selective cat flap control unit" he was very impressed. "Purr-purr" said Ginger, thats quite clever . . . I shall be able to get in to eat my food, without worrying about "Blackie" from next door. But said Ginger, there is a much better use for your Sensitive radiation detector device . . think about this. Your politicians keep on talking about the "World Energy Crisis", when all the time you have vast stocks of it stored up in the H bomb war heads of your rocket missile warheads in the form of deuterium and tritium. As you know according to the equation E = mc2, doodled out by young Albert Einstein, way back in 1905 in the Swiss Patent Office, you only have to destroy a tiny amount of mass to get a hell of a lot of energy, so what your politicians really mean is that there is an oil fuel and electricity shortage, not an energy shortage. But, of course, went on Ginger, because you won't believe what Jesus Christ told you about "loving each other", you also don't trust each other, or, if you like, your governments don't, which is perhaps understandable with two murderous World Wars since 1900. But, of course, if all your nuclear energy was used for peaceful purposes, instead of a large part of it being stored up for blowing each other to bits with H bombs and the like, you could all save a hell of a lot of money, which would help to stop World Inflation and might even bring down the price of tinned cat food. It is obvious, went on Ginger, that even with the SALT talks on limiting strategic weapons, between the USA and USSR governments, they are not going to get RID OF their H bombs since RED China is building up its stock . . . so what do we do about it? Well went on Ginger, I have been studying nuclear physics for quite a while, and it seems to me there is something "not quite right with it all". All your physicists have been very clever at breaking up the nucleus of the Atom, but they don't really UNDERSTAND it at all, because none of them can really EXPLAIN, even with all their beautiful equations, whythe nucleus stays together anyway, since all your physics books tell me. "Like electro-statically charged bodies repulse each other", and yet all those protons seems to cling together like in a tiny bunch of grapes, with the neutrons in the nucleus of a size around 10-13 cms. "It's really rather ridiculous, went on Ginger, but not one of them thinks for a moment . . . "Well, perhaps the nucleus is quite normal . . . and it's all the World's Physics Books which are wrong when they say "Like electrostatic charges repulse each other." Once you realise this, went on Ginger, it's easy to understand what is holding the nucleus together, and once you know that it is easy to understand what you have to do to disintegrate it altogether, instead of just fissioning it. And that, went on Ginger, leads to the biggest possible bomb i.e. the "CND" Bomb, with the full application of Einstein's E = mc2, to the whole mass of the nucleus... and with this arrangement it's easy to get into an Earth Orbital satellite a 1000 Megaton "CND", Bomb. So, continued Ginger, if the "Superpowers" want to stop wasting the precious energy in H bomb warheads, the way to do it is to get some United Nations Agency to put into Earth orbit a 1000 Megaton "CND" Bomb, which will detect a nuclear attack below it, and be automatically programmed to fall down upon that part of the Earth's surface from which the attack originated. And that, added Ginger, is where your radiation detector device comes in useful, as he described to me the concept illustrated in Figures 8, 9 and 10. This is Ginger's idea. Let Figure 8 show a cross section through the Earth, more or less on the equator, rotating anti-clockwise about the Polar axis. Let A, B and C be the locations of 3, potentially hostile, States, all of which have stocks of H bomb ballistic missiles. There are put into Earth orbit, beyond the air layer, a certain number of 1000 MegatonCND bombs, as shown on an enlarged scale in Figure 9. The lower end of each such satellite, as shown in Figure 9, includes a radiation detector, according to the invention, as in Figures 4 and 5 and the satellite has Missile Search Radar Aerials, MSR, which can detect, and compute, through a Central Control Unit Computer CCC, the track of a large number of ballistic missiles. Suppose the State, marked C, initiates the firing, as on orbit track T of a substantial number of rockets with H bomb war heads, which are directed to fall and detonate upon the state A, creating the emission of a large output of radiant energy RE. This radiation burst RE, is detected by a radiation detector according to the invention, as the "CND" Bomb carrying satellite Reprisal Bomb orbits in space above the mushroom cloud MC above the region or state A, which has been attacked by the rockets. The detection of this nuclear attack by the radiation detector in tube 1, through the Central Computer Control CCC, operates firing circuits for retro-rockets, which will bring down the "CND" Reprisal Bomb, through the Earth's air layer to produce an enormous explosion upon the region of state C, the position of which has been determined through the computer CCC from signals fed in from the Missile Search Radar MSR. The Computer CCC then activates the Holding Unit H in Figure 9 to release the 1000 Megaton "CND" reprisal Bomb at the correct moment to fall upon region or the state C. Instead of the "CND" automatic Reprisal Bomb, forming part of an ARNDS system being put into high speed orbit outside the air layer, as in Figure 8, they could be put into "Stationary Orbit", about 23,000 miles out in space, as for a T/V satellite, as in Figure 10, where they would still be effective to rapidly detect a level of radiation, moving at around 186,000 miles a second, which indicated that a nuclear attack had taken place and use their radar to track the point of origin of the missile attack, and then detach their "CND" bombs, with suitable retro-rocket thrust, to fall upon that part of the Earth's surface from which the nuclear attack had originated. The whole point of the system, as pointed out by my ingenious Ginger Cat, is to put into effect, permanently, a fully automatic reprisal system against an attack by H bomb carrying rockets, so that it would be ensured that any State or Government, initiating an attack, would in effect be committing suicide. By such an arrangement there might be a great reduction in useless expenditure on Nuclear rockets and Anti-Missile-Missile systems, thus reducing inflation and stabilising the price of cat foods. As Ginger pointed out to me the whole unfortunate situation might have been avoided if Albert Einstein had not "doodled out" his equation E = mc2, in the SwissPatent Office around 1905 instead of getting on with the work he was being paid to do. But it is also strange that the physical world should be so arranged that this change of mass into energy should be possible at all. Einstein, like Lord Rutherford, had the opinion that it would never be possible on a large scale, even until presented with the possibility of a nuclear change chain-reaction presented to him by the physicists Sziliard, Wigner and Teller, which led to his letter to President Roosevelt, which was entirely motivated by his fear that Adolf Hitler and his Nazis might "get there first". |
